GO PURPLE for Crime Victims’ Rights Week in Nevada
A total of 94,751 cases of “Index Crimes” including murder, rape, robbery, serious property crimes, and more, were investigated across Nevada according to the FBI Uniform Crime Report of 2017.
National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is April 7-13 this year, as designated by the US Department of Justice, and the Office for Victims of Crime. This week recognizes victims of crime across America, and the need for respect and consideration through the judicial process.
This week also serves to unite Americans and remember the importance and impact of protected rights for victims of crime. Here in Nevada we were proud to see residents vote YES for Marsy’s Law/Question 1 last November to establish constitutional rights for crime victims statewide. Just like the suspects in criminal cases, Nevada victims of crime will now have the right to a protected voice, information and consideration during the judicial process.
In recognition of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week businesses and individuals are once again GOING PURPLE during the week of April 7-13th to show their support.
Supporters Can Post Photos on Social Media
Supporters can support survivors and victims’ rights by taking a photo wearing purple, or near one of the locations Going Purple. Then simply post it on your social media using hashtags #VictimsRightsNV and #NCVRW2019, and post on the Marsy’s Law for Nevada Facebook page.

PUBLIC EVENTS:
Friday April 5th, at 4:00pm, Pinwheels for Prevention, by WDVS, at the Humboldt County Courthouse, 50 W. 5th Street in Winnemucca.
Wednesday, April 10th, at 5:00pm, Washoe County Candlelight Vigil. Northern Nevada advocacy groups will hold a candlelight vigil, organized by the Alliance for Victims’ Rights in Reno, NV. Event to be held at the Mills Lane Justice Center, One S. Sierra Street, 3rd Floor.
Saturday, April 13th, from 10am to 12:30, Winnemucca DVS – Party in the Park. The Winnemucca Domestic Violence Shelter will host its annual event to raise awareness about violence and resources available. Location is Vesco Park in Winnemucca, at 50 W. Winnemucca Blvd..
Marsy’s Law for Nevada Guarantees Crime Victims:
• The Right to receive information about their rights, and the services available to crime victims.
• Right to be treated with fairness and respect throughout the criminal justice process.
• Right to be protected from the defendant.
• Right to notice of all public proceedings in the case.
• Right to be reasonably heard, upon request, at all public proceedings regarding the case.
• Right to reasonably confer with the prosecuting agency, upon request, regarding the case.
• Right to full and timely restitution.

History of Marsy’s Law
The effort is named after Marsalee “Marsy” Nicholas who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in California in 1983. A week later he was released pending his court proceedings and went face to face with the victim’s family, who had no idea he was out of jail. Today her brother, Dr. Henry T. Nicholas is working to secure a voice and protection for victims’ and their families, nationwide. Similar Marsy’s Law measures have now been approved in eleven states: California, Illinois, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Nevada.
