Partnering With Young Adults In the Commonwealth
In the last several weeks the Marsy’s Law for Kentucky team has joined several groups of young people at events across our Commonwealth. These events were to raise awareness during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and these amazing young adults want you to know that rape and sexual assault happens.
The first event was at Murray State and the second at UofL for their annual Take Back the Night Rallies. The third was a walk and rally put on by Derby City Consent, and the fourth was the University of Kentucky’s/Transy Take Back the Night Rally.
We marched, chanted & educated. Tears were shed while very personal stories were shared. I was incredibly blessed to witness both male and female victims find their voices, release their shame and take back their power.
And I think they would want you to know the following:
– 1 in 3 females and 1 in 6 males will be the victim of sexual assault in their lifetime.
– In 2015, forcible sex offenses occurred once every two hours in Kentucky.
– A majority of child victims are ages 12-17…34% are under age 12 and 66% are ages 12-17.
– Meanwhile, only 6 out of every 1000 perpetrators will end up in prison.
Marsy’s Law will allow Kentucky rape/sexual assault victims – you, your daughter, son, sister, brother, grandchild, friend – to more easily become SURVIVORS by giving them a protected voice in the criminal justice process.
